On March 25, the Lakeland Hawks Track and Field team went head-to-head with the Sandpoint Bulldogs in a thrilling dual meet held at Sandpoint High School. While the Hawks ultimately fell short in the competition, their athletes delivered several standout performances that showcased their skill, determination, and team spirit.
Boys’ 100 Meter: Apolo Gratzinger had a strong finish, placing second with a time of 11.6 seconds.
Girls’ 100 Meter: The Lakeland girls dominated the 100-meter race. Sapphire Ruelle claimed first place with a time of 12.9 seconds, while Karstyn Kiefer secured third with 13.2 seconds.
Boys’ 200 Meter: Jaron Yager earned second place with a time of 24.2 seconds, and Mason Hensley followed closely behind in third place with 25.0 seconds.
Girls’ 200 Meter: The girls continued their success in the 200-meter event, with Sapphire Ruelle finishing first in 26.9 seconds. Melia Gilbert took second with 27.9 seconds, and Jordin Cysewski rounded out the top three with 29.2 seconds.
Boys’ 400 Meter: Ryan Engelbrecht finished second in the boys’ 400-meter race, crossing the line in 53.0 seconds.
Girls’ 400 Meter: The girls also claimed the top three spots in the 400 meters, with Gloria Peterson finishing first in 1:07.2. Anabella Palaniuk followed in second place with 1:07.7, and Macy Bretveld finished third in 1:08.4.
Boys’ 800 Meter: Jayden Dan-Johnston took first place with an impressive 2:10.0. Ryan Engelbrecht finished just behind in second with 2:10.1, while Charlie Mattila rounded out the top three with 2:11.6.
Girls’ 800 Meter: Maddison Chapple claimed first place in the girls’ 800-meter race with a time of 2:40.0.
Boys’ 1600 Meter: Frank McCarthy secured second place with a time of 4:44.5, and Parker Sterling earned third place in 4:46.0.
Boys’ 3200 Meter: In the men’s 3200 meters, Frank McCarthy tied for first place with a time of 10:34.5, and Parker Sterling finished third with 10:50.4.
Girls’ 3200 Meter: Maddison Chapple continued her impressive performance, taking first place in the girls’ 3200-meter race with a time of 13:02.2.
Boys’ 300 Meter Hurdles: Alexander Mura earned third place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.1 seconds.
Relays:
- Girls’ 4×100 Relay: The team of Casey Foster, Melia Gilbert, Sapphire Ruelle, and Karstyn Kiefer captured first place with a time of 50.1 seconds, setting a personal record.
- Boys’ 4×200 Relay: The squad of Apolo Gratzinger, Ben Roth, Peyton Sardinha, and Jaron Yager finished second with a time of 1:33.3, also marking a personal best.
- Girls’ 4×200 Relay: The team of Jordin Cysewski, Casey Foster, Melia Gilbert, and Karstyn Kiefer placed first with a time of 1:47.8, setting a personal record.
- Boys’ 4×400 Relay: The relay team of Ethan Hunt, Ryan Engelbrecht, Apolo Gratzinger, and Jaron Yager earned first place with a time of 3:33.1, while the team of Frank McCarthy, Charlie Mattila, Parker Sterling, and Jayden Dan-Johnston took third with a time of 3:52.3.
- Girls’ 4×400 Relay: The team of Casey Foster, Reesa Saxe, Kapree Kiefer, and Karstyn Kiefer placed second with a time of 4:26.9. Another team made up of Maddison Chapple, Annie Mattila, Isabella Wright, and Piper Peterson finished third with a time of 5:01.4.
- Boys’ SMR 1600m: The team of Colin Burke, Jaxon Cysewski, Hunter Clark, and Joshua Callender claimed first place with a time of 4:41.4, marking a personal record.
Field Events:
- Girls’ Shot Put: Jackie Robbins finished second with a throw of 9.41 meters, while Isabelle Meredith took third with a throw of 8.85 meters.
- Boys’ Shot Put: Brayden Carrel dominated the men’s shot put event, winning first place with a throw of 13.79 meters.
- Boys’ Discus: Kenai Munyer earned third place with a throw of 37.86 meters.
- Girls’ Discus: Jackie Robbins claimed first place with a throw of 34.52 meters, and Anabella Palaniuk took third with a throw of 31.88 meters.
- Boys’ High Jump: Ben Roth captured first place with a leap of 6′ 2″.
- Girls’ High Jump: Macy Bretveld finished second with a jump of 4′ 8″.
- Boys’ Pole Vault: Kros O’Brien secured second place with a jump of 11 feet.
- Girls’ Pole Vault: Reesa Saxe placed third with a jump of 7′ 6″.
- Boys’ Long Jump: Mason Hensley placed second with a jump of 5.37 meters, while Garrett Hall earned third place, also jumping 5.37 meters.
- Men’s Triple Jump: Mason Hensley finished second with a jump of 11.63 meters, and Garrett Hall placed third with 11.20 meters.
- Women’s Triple Jump: Anabel Bowie took first place in the women’s triple jump with a jump of 9.47 meters.
“I know I need to throw hard and try and get a PR,” Carrel said, “I feel like I am doing well this season not my best though. I need to get it farther.”
Though the Lakeland Hawks fell short in the overall dual, their performance was marked by impressive individual and team results across the board. The athletes demonstrated resilience, teamwork, and skill, and they will look to build on these achievements in their upcoming meets.
