No normal person likes waking up early.
It’s normal for us humans to want to get as much sleep as possible because it is what fuels us throughout the day.
Without sleep most people turn into zombies.
“I like to sleep because my body feels replenished when I wake up,” said Blaine Gilmore, sophomore at Lakeland High School
Your brain becomes slow and it’s hard to absorb new things because it is just a pile of mush when deprived of sleep.
The point I’m trying to make is that sleep is healthy and needed and if we are withheld the time needed to sleep then it makes us live like lesser beings and we can’t reach our full potential.
I think one of the biggest influences in a student’s life is in fact the amount of sleep they get each night.
Whether or not a student gets enough sleep can make or break their education.
If a student is tired then they have a hard time paying attention and more often than not end up falling asleep and missing the whole lesson.
Schools are always so strict about attendance but is falling asleep in class and missing the lesson not the same thing as just missing class in general?
Spoiler Alert: it’s exactly the same thing.
Now, it’s very easy to put the blame on the school, but to be fair it’s not completely their fault.
I think schools do need to start caring for their students and working with them rather than just telling us to deal with it because that’s just the way it is.
As a student myself, I can honestly say that if school started even a couple hours later my grades would most definitely improve and so would my passion for learning.
One of the main reasons why students do badly in school is because they don’t want to be here so they’re just miserable all day and don’t have that positive mindset.
Almost every student struggles with this and for good reason too.
If schools started later, I believe that student behavior and student success would sky rocket.
It’s so much easier for students to learn when they aren’t fighting just to stay awake.
It’s also easier to have a positive attitude and that is such an important part of being successful.
In my personal experience, whenever I have come to school deprived of sleep I always suffer the consequences.
I just completely stop caring about studying, getting my work done, or even paying attention in class.
It’s so much harder to learn and that’s why we need school to start at a later time.
If we were in elementary school then I could kind of see and understand why late school isn’t permitted due to parents having to work and not being able to get their children to school.
But as high school students, most are capable of either taking the bus or driving to school so parents don’t have to worry about transporting their kid.
To sum up my point, us students are tired and need a break.
Schools please listen to your students and allow later starts. Remember that this is all just my opinion based on personal experiences. I asked a fellow student what they thought of school starting later and they explained that they believe we should have later start because our schedules don’t always permit being to school so early as students.
“Students have so much homework that they do not get enough sleep and sports also interfere with sleep too,” Maddie Chapple, sophomore at LHS said.
