The Lakeland Hawks softball team took on the Lake City Timberwolves in the 2025 season opener. The Hawks sadly fell in both games of the doubleheader at home.
The first game was a high-scoring showdown of 13-19 and the second game was a final score of 12-3. The Hawks really put a good game together offensively in the first game, putting up a solid 13 runs is very impressive despite the loss. ‘
“We got in our heads pretty bad in the second game after the loss in the first,” Delilah Zimmerman said.
Especially being the first game of the season, this could be a big hint into what to expect from these Hawks later on in the season. With such high scores, who’s behind these explosive swings driving in all these runs?
Junior shortstop Zimmerman had an outstanding game at the plate clocking in 4 home runs on the day.
“We went into the game with a confident mindset at the plate,” Zimmerman said.
She is now the team leader for home runs so far, with Jaiden Corby right behind her with a solid 2 home runs on the season as well.
If there’s one thing you can take away from this start to the season the Hawks can swing it, and they aren’t afraid either.
Leading the team in batting average is Raygen Dutton with a 0.7500 average. Right behind her is Zimmerman with a 0.714 average.
Losses to start the season are never what a team wants, but it’s important for this Hawks team to continue to grow from this and not let this two-game series define the rest of their season.
The Hawks are now preparing for their annual season tournament down in Boise Idaho. Lakeland is set to play many out-of-conference teams and it will truly test the Hawks playing such different skill-level teams.
“Communication will be a key to success down there,” Zimmerman said.
