Receiving or collecting something brings a certain type of joy to a person. While it may not be for everyone, collecting is a big part of life and can range from everything from childhood stuffed animals to clothes. While collecting or saving things is a bittersweet experience and memory it can also become a big problem.
Collecting starts to become a problem when having such a hold on these things makes you incapable of getting rid of them.
For example, I tend to hold on to old art projects and things from my childhood that I do not need or use or look at, but every time that I clean and get rid of things I just can not seem to put them in the trash. I have a tendency to hold on to older things that I have no use for, and most of them honestly do not even bring many memories with them, they just feel special in the moment.
While things like these just sit in the closet and collect dust it can be aggravating when getting rid of them feels like a breakup. Holding on to things can become a bad habit and make a space crowded.
After a while collections start to pile up and make their way into everything, taking up more room than needed. This is when collections start to become too much.
“I would collect a lot of incense because I liked the way they smelt, but I had more than I could burn and it started to become a problem of buying any scent I saw in sight,” Callum Coffey said.
While it can take up room, collecting can also take up money. Starting with just one small thing to collect can turn into a big expense really quickly.
“I would come home with more incense and just throw it on the huge pile of unopened boxes that I already had. Some were even duplicated,” Coffey said.
Collecting small things can become large quickly. While it may not feel like a lot at the time, the more it starts to pile up the worse it gets.
Learning how to not hold onto old things and go through collections is an ultimate saver.
It is hard when it comes down to going through stuff and being left with the decision of what to keep and what to get rid of.
Part of a person feels like they need to hold onto certain things even though they are used almost never or barely at all.
While holding onto those may feel sentimental it can also be a huge burden. Learning how to let go and free up space feels like such a relief in the end. Most of the things you think you need to hang onto are not things you typically lose.
While you may think that it is needed in your life most of the time it is not. Learning how to let go and what to collect is a good life skill.
