Big changes may be coming to the Lakeland community as the proposal for a four-day school week has come upon the district.
A survey was sent out to only parents asking if they would support a four-day school week. Out of the total 1,845 votes, 1,237 voted in favor of the four-day schedule.
This puts the vote at 67.05 percent in favor and 32.95 percent against.
On Feb. 5, Lakeland Joint School District 272 superintendent Lisa Arnold proposed the idea for a 4-day school week to help budget cuts and work with KTEC to make a fair schedule with Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene’s Friday schedules.
Arnold said a move to four days could save more than $500,000 a year.
The board will discuss the outcomes of this survey on Feb. 19. During its Feb. 5 meeting, the four-day school week proposal was met with missed reactions from board members.
A potential schedule proposed to make up the hours the school will miss on Friday is from 7:35 am and out at 3:00 pm.
While a lot of students are excited about the potential of a four-day school week, others are worried about the length of the school day and how it affects other activities.
“I do not feel like it will affect cheer because we practice later, but it may affect others a little, it only sets them back an hour though,” Zoie Davis said.
While some of these sports and activities start at 2:30 pm now after school, starting at 3:15 does not seem so bad.
While the times for sports can be changed and are up in the air, according to the Lakeland agenda the set time for dismissal is 3:00 pm as of now.
