The Lakeland Joint School District 272 board members voted at its Jan. 15 special meeting to rerun the levy.
It was a 3-2 vote. Randi Bain, Bob Jones, and Dave Quimby were the three votes to rerun the levy.
The levy is going to be reran for $7.52 million dollars. Voters will have an opportunity to vote on the levy in May.
Many students at LHS are excited about the levy being reran.
“I cried when it failed originally,” Lakeland student Tessa Dorr said, “I was really sad for the school district. It feels like the board and administration did not really educate the community on what they were voting for.”
A significant concern among students was the prospect of pay-to-play athletics.
“I feel like without the money the smaller sports that do not really have recognition will dwindle down like cross country and track.”
“Through our sports and extracurriculars this is who we are and what we want to do so without it in high school, it could mess up our futures,” Rowan Mckinzie, LHS sophomore, said, “It helps with scholarships and college opportunities.”
Mckinzie believes that community members need to be educated on what they are voting for.
“They are voting on their future neighbors, workers, and community members,” she said.
The board will meet several times over the next several weeks to discuss where the cuts will take place.
