The Lakeland Hawks wrestling team is the reigning back-to-back district champions with the 5A changes Lewiston is now in the district.
The boys have shown they are a strong team this year and are still at the top of the district.
They had a dual against Lewiston on Jan. 7. They beat Lewiston 43-31. They won the matches that they were expected to win and even the wrestlers who lost improved their skill on the mat.
Caleb Adams won his match at 106 by a pin.
“I feel good and I feel comfortable wrestling at districts because I know I can beat the kids at my weight,” Adams said, “I have improved my stance, shots, and scrambling.”
Cole Cooper won his match at 144, 5-4, against Gunner Whitlock. They are both ranked wrestlers and since Cooper took the match he moved up in his rankings.
“I had a tough match, but I wrestled well,” Cooper said, “It feels good sitting on top at districts right now.”
Daemon Huddleston won his match 6-5 and 215 pounds.
“It feels knowing I can beat someone in our districts,” Huddleston said, “I think I can improve more on conditioning. In the match, I stayed defensive when I had to and got takedowns.”
Hawks Hope to Keep Momentum
The Lakeland Wrestling team will be at Post Falls High School for River City Duals Jan 10-11. Last year they got first place in the silver bracket.
“I am hurting but ready,” Austin Howell said, “as a team, we should place top two in the gold bracket.”
Cooper explains the team is missing some key components in their lineup but they are still going to wrestle well.
Adams explained that even though some wrestlers are hurt the JV wrestlers have stepped up in place of the injured varsity starters.
“I know I have some tough matches but it will be a good ranking for state,” Adams said.
The girls will also be wrestling in individual brackets at Post Falls Jan 10-11.
