The Lakeland Hawks had a busy two weeks with sports.
The Wrestling team held their 5A dual tournament on December 29th. The Hawks went undefeated and even beat Minico High School, the returning state champions.
Carson Leonard at 120, Jaren Knopp at 126, Cole Cooper at 144, Austin Howell at 150, and Kalab Hammer at 157 all came out of the duals undefeated.
Lakeland beat Sandpoint High School 57-21, Lewiston 50-33, and Minico 46-38. Zane Grey took the varsity spot at 285 and, when it mattered the most for his team, won his match against Devon Sibbett in 1:40.
“It is good to be on varsity; it does suck because of the circumstances. I got the spot,” Grey said, “It was a good pin; it was my first dual as a varsity starter, and beating a state finalist was a great way to start it off.”
Lakeland girls came in third at the Chad E. Ross Memorial tournament. Teagan Patrick placed third. Adalyn Lisenbe took second at 138. Kiera Balch also came in second at 152. Avah Clark took fourth at 165.
The boys also went to Rollie Lane from January 3rd through 4th. Zach Teal placed second at 98 pounds.
The boys’ basketball team played Shadle Park on December 27th. They won the game 67-54.
They went to Pocatello from January 2nd to 4th. On Thursday, they lost 68-44 against Century. On Friday, they came back and beat Jackson Hole 68-62. On Saturday, they beat Skyline 46-36 and came in third.
Jace Taylor had a season-high of 8 points.
“As a team, I feel we shined in certain moments but did struggle at times with fundamentals of the game,” Taylor said, “As the season has progressed, we have grown tremendously. I have been consistent, but I need to limit the turnovers.”
The girls basketball team lost to Grangeville 36-35 on January 2nd.
Even though it hasn’t been the best season, Landree Simon is still on top of her game and has made 1,000 baskets in her high school career.
“It felt like a huge accomplishment. It has always been a goal of mine to reach 1000,” Simon said, “The most I have scored in a game is 28. This season, I am doing pretty well; getting the 1000 points makes me want to work harder, and I just hope we end up at state.”
