The Lakeland High School (LHS) Dance team made its debut this past weekend, December 7th. The girls competed at the Prairie Classic Competition at LHS.
Multiple dance teams competed at both the middle and high school levels.
The team has competed in this many years before and has come out on top for their routines. This year, they did the same, coming in first for Lyrical, a style of dance that incorporates both ballet and jazz techniques. They are looking forward to improving and taking first place in all routines. This was a good starting place for the girls, and they are hoping to see only success in the future.
They competed in multiple competitions, including individual, duo, military, lyrical, and hip-hop.
Lily Still and Rowan McKenzie each competed in an individual competition. Mckenzie even experienced technical difficulties during her routine and never missed a beat.
Alyssa Caywood and Sarah Allen competed in a duet competition. Their routine was electric, with Caywood and Allen incorporating flips and tricks, which made the pair nervous. The music set the mood, being an upbeat and fun Latin mix. It was Hip-Hop, which only added to the excitement they brought to the floor. They also wore fun outfits, including bright red pants and a sleek black lace long-sleeve, which placed first in the category.
In this competition, the only competitor at the high school level was Post Falls High School (PFHS). They competed in most of the competitions we competed in.
This competition landed on the same weekend as Drama State for LHS, which meant that some dancers were absent from this competition.
“This required some last-minute reblocking routines and figuring out formations before our competition,” Sarah Allen, a team co-captain, said.
Their coach, Laura Kelley, also a teacher at LHS, thought they did extremely well considering the circumstances. They had just learned the choreography a few weeks previously, and it was also their first time competing this season.
“This team does a great job at being a family,” Coach Kelley said.
They have been together for years, so they know how each other moves and how to click.
On competition day, stress can often affect a team, but this team did a good job of keeping their attitudes high and working together.
“Even though we did not place as well as we all would have wanted, I am still proud of these girls,” Coach Kelley said.
