It is a common thing in everyday life. Humans are a peculiar species filled with little quirks and odd habits. The things people feel the need to do or have accidentally trained themselves to do during certain times is an interesting concept. From things like compulsive knuckle cracking to needed objects organized in perfect symmetry, everyone has a different routine or quirk in their life that may seem odd to others. Not all of these habits are bad, though. Take Savannah Spalding, for example.
Spalding is a senior at Lakeland High School with a particular shower routine.
“Every time before I get in the shower, I have to soak my hair in rosemary oil, light my candles, put my blankets in the dryer to warm them up, lay out my slippers, and make tea,” Spalding said.
While this habit may seem odd or excessive to others, it is a must for Spalding. Spalding loves the feeling of focusing more on her self-care with this routine and relaxation. After talking and seeing her friend Sarah Allen’s routine, Spalding loved the idea of feeling so organized and self-focused and started doing the routine twice to thrice a week. Spalding enjoys putting on music and braiding her hair while the smell of the candle spreads throughout the room, it leaves her in a state of relaxation and creates a calming environment.
“I started to do this about four months ago because I was stressed, and that was the best way for me to focus and take care of myself,” Spalding said.
Spalding thinks this habit reflects much of her personality, showing that she likes to prioritize herself and set up a relaxing, organized environment.
Habits like Spaldings may be more common and seem healthier, but others can be an issue. These are things that people have accidentally trained themselves to do and now have to work their way to break.
“I have a really bad habit of screaming or wheezing loud when I am working out,” Mica Kazemba said.
Kazemba has been in the gym and working on his health since his freshman year. Unfortunately, with this, though, he has created bad habits of pushing himself too hard or causing a ruckus while lifting. Most people do not find this habit very amusing and get mad or raise an eyebrow when Kazemba is being too loud. People typically want to work out in peace and do not enjoy when people are slamming weights or making accessive noises in the gym. This bad habit creates an alarming environment for Kazemba and can get on others’ nerves.
“I started going to the gym when I got called chicken legs, and sometimes I will push myself to lift really hard, and that is usually when I start yelling and wheezing. People think that I am a little crazy,” Kazemba said.
Kazemba is a very routine person who goes to the gym every day. He has tried very little to break this habit because it has become such a big part of his gym routine, and he almost feels that he has to make these excessive noises while working out.
Habits that we have trained ourselves to do intentionally or not can be some of the best or worst things to happen to us. No matter what habit or quirk it is, though, it is definitely an interesting perception of a person. Most people who were asked about their odd habits said that they did fit their personalities and showed a certain side of them that most people would never know, both good and bad.
I think it is fun to listen and watch those little habits that people have, and I also believe it makes us individual from each other. While many people have odd tendencies and habits in common, it is still like everyone has their own little things that they do in their routines. I have a lot of odd habits, like constantly popping my knuckles or accidentally turning my blinker on in a round-a-bout. I think that the oddest one I have, though, would probably have to be the small things like keeping my feet under the covers at all times or turning the radio down when passing people.
I have just random miscellaneous tendencies that I do almost every day. For example, when I am sleeping, my feet always have to be under the covers, or else I can not fall asleep. Another one is when anything happens while I am driving or just passing someone on the road, I have to turn my radio down. I also have odd ones, like replaying arguments or saying things that I should have said to people and talking to myself. While that makes me sound absolutely crazy, it is something I have taught myself by accident and have tried to stop for a while now.
Random little habits like these are what make people their own and can really show someone’s personality. Everyone has habits and quirks in their lives, and whether they are common or not, there is no lie that they are what sets people apart from the rest.
