The Hawks continue to prove themselves this season with a massive victory over the Lewiston Bengals 34-14. Lakeland is now officially the 5A district champions, putting them in position to host their first playoff game.
A huge upset for the Hawks beating the Bengals, keeping up a score that blew fans’ minds. The Bengals, earlier in the season, had dominated the CHS Vikings in a non-conference game. Lewiston making a huge statement like that so early in the season turned some coaches heads, but that didn’t bother the Hawks.
Driving down into Bengal territory and taking over completely in a massive conference game.
The Bangles kept it close in the first quarter, with a 7-7 score, and the Hawks needed to respond. They put up a quick 6 in the second quarter to push their lead going into halftime, holding the Bangles to only 7 points in the whole first half.
Both defenses were feeling good Friday, especially in the third quarter, when both teams came out with no score throughout the whole period.
Lakeland’s offense needed to improve, and little did Lewiston know that the Hawks were coming out swinging in this fourth quarter.
Putting up 21 points and holding the Bangles to 7 points in the fourth, sealing the deal.
Once again, Lovie Weil showed up with one thing on his mind, getting to that end zone.
“There truly are no words to describe it, the feeling of all the hard work paying off,” Weil said.
The trust this Hawks team has in its offensive line and its run game is something that is truly admirable.
“I can hand the ball off to Lovie with complete confidence knowing he will get the job done no matter what happens,” Haydon Benson said.
Weil rushed for 166 yards and 3 touchdowns against the Bengals and continues to lead the same in touchdowns with 24 so far on the season and more to come.
Benson also rushed for a very solid 88 yards with 12 carries and a touchdown.
This win has brought so much hope to Hawk fans and Rathdrum residents. Being able to host a round of playoffs is a game-changer, and they get the opportunity home crowd. Lakeland will take on Shelley High School for the first round of the playoffs on Friday at 7 p.m. on Corbett Field.
“Welcome to the Hawks nest, Shelley,” Jace Taylor said.
