Setting up for State
On Tuesday, Oct 22, the Lakeland girls volleyball team took Sandpoint out of the running for state, beating them with a sweep.
“It felt freaking fantastic taking them out of the running,” Alyssa Ryckman said, “I feel like if we keep our momentum going from the Saturday sweep, State will go just how we planned, we will be taking home the state title.”
On Thursday, Oct. 24, they lost one of the games against the Lewiston Bengals by 3-2 then won the second game 3-1.
Since they lost one of the games on Thursday, they had to make a comeback on Saturday, Oct. 26.
They ended up winning the game 3-0 and now will be on their way to state.
“I think we went into the Lewiston game cocky, and not understanding the fact that it’s districts and no one is better than anybody and everyone wants to go to state,” Raygen Dutton said, “I think we have a sense of security being number one seed, but we need to go into every game with the mindset we had Saturday.”
They understand want they did wrong on Thursday and they are going to fix their mistakes. Lakeland volleyball is currently sitting in the first seed in the bracket for state.
Running to State
The Lakeland Cross country team has made it across the finish line and is taking the whole girls team and three of the boys to state.
“Our girls team does an excellent job running together as a group which makes them stronger when it comes to competing against other teams,” co-head-coach Colleen Hall said.
Maddie Chapple placed 4th, Sapphire Ruelle in 7th Place, Bristol Burnside in 8th Place, and Piper Peterson in 9th Place. Since the entire girls team has qualified Annie Mattila, Melia Gilbert, Sam Guadagnini, and Rory Spurway will also be running at state for lakeland girls cross country.
Coach Hall believes they are a good team to keep your eye on throughout the state.
“All three boys going to state are consistently dedicated and focused so I know they are going to do very well at state,” Hall said.
They are consistent at running together which makes them stronger.
The boys’ cross country was taken by Frank Mcarthy who placed 2nd, Parker Sterling who took 7th Place, and Charlie Mattila who came in 10th Place.
“I am hoping to get top 40 at state,” McCarthy said, “I feel pretty light. My legs aren’t very sore. I am excited for the bus ride it is always fun. For the next few years, I feel like I can make it as an individual but also as a team.”
