How many schools can say that their janitor taught Latin and ballroom dance? Or that their janitor can build beautiful set pieces and compose choreography for plays?
In the small yet bustling town of Rathdrum, some of the best people can go completely unnoticed in day-to-day life. Yet even the smallest gestures can make a world of difference in the lives of those around them. This person at Lakeland High School is Cathy Fahrmeyer.
Many have seen her around the school during her job as the school’s janitor. Yet she does so much more around this school than anyone could ever ask for.
“Cathy is simply amazing. I am an extremely unorganized person, and Farhmeyer volunteered to redesign my entire room. It has seriously been a lifesaver for me,” Lakeland High School teacher Mike Dunn said.
Farhmeyer also recently made set pieces for the school’s upcoming play.
The set pieces consist of recycled materials collected from around the school, such as plastic water bottles, pieces of wood, and scrap cardboard. All these materials, which were once trash, were crafted beautifully into a mermaid throne and boat for the upcoming Little Mermaid play. These set pieces bring the play to life and give aspiring actors at Lakeland a more realistic scene to work with.
“She created King Triton’s trident and his throne, a boat for the lagoon scene, and many costumes, including the most adorable seagull costumes. Cathy lightened our load and designed things we would have never had the time to.” Drama teacher Allison Knoll said.
Contributing to the play, Farhmeyer also goes into the school’s acting class and helps choreograph the students. Although she does not have to, the time and things that she does for the school are irreplaceable and extremely helpful to the school’s theater program.
“The reason I donate my time and energy to the theater program is because it’s not only a creative outlet, but therapeutic. My sister was a music teacher for 39 years, and she just passed away about a year ago. This was my way of honoring her and the wonderful memories she gave me,” Fahrmeyer said.
People have a huge impact on others’ lives. For Farhmeyer, her sister inspires her love for music and dance. For Lakeland, Cathay inspires the school to be more helpful and caring.
Not only does she play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy and productive environment in Lakeland, but she also plays a crucial role in the culture and family of Lakeland.
“My favorite things about helping are that I like creating and teaching dance routines, especially with these students because they are willing to learn, talented, and so nice and appreciative,” Farhmeyer said.
Her work creates a safe and welcoming atmosphere, which allows students to thrive. Additionally, she also handles minor repairs and maintenance issues, ensuring the facilities are always in good working order. Farhmeyer is an invaluable member of the Lakeland Community and every person that knows her is lucky to know such a helpful soul.
