This past week, Lakeland High School has been preparing for the upcoming homecoming dance. Throughout the week, the school assigned various dress-up days and held a competition between freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors to determine the best-dressed class each day.
The school designated Monday as pajama day, and 93 juniors arrived dressed in their laziest attire. Students and teachers all over the school participated in wearing their coziest clothing for the day.
Some people dressed in one-piece jumpsuits, while others dressed in pajama pants and a comfy shirt.
On Tuesday, students had the option to wear either Olympic attire, or their chosen class color. freshman were blue, sophomores were yellow, juniors were red, and seniors were black.
While juniors won on the first day, they took third on Olympic day. Seniors had a whopping 126 students dress up in either black or sports attire taking first. And with freshmen on their tails with 111 people in blue, they took second.
Tuesday was an easy day for people to dress up, making it the most dressed day this week with a total of 382 students that dressed up.
Wednesday was the most intriguing day of the week, with its topic being anything but a backpack.
Students brought things such as lockers, shopping carts, and many other unique things to carry their belongings.
“My favorite day this week was definitely anything but a backpack because my grandma helped me out and gave me a huge pot to put all of my belongings in,” Rylee Dragon said.
This was one of the harder days to participate in because of the creative aspect needed to participate. Wednesday’s winner was the freshmen class with a total of 64 students bringing a unique item to use as their backpack for the day. Juniors trailed closely behind them with a total of 58 students.
The junior with the most interesting “backpack” was Grace Jamison.
“My favorite day was anything but a backpack because I brought a shopping cart and I was able to give people rides in the cart and go all out and have fun with it,” Grace Jamison said.
Another interesting day was the Thursday theme. Each class had its theme to follow with freshmen being Willy Wonka, sophomores being Clue, juniors being Y2K, and seniors being superheroes. Y2K’s theme for juniors had the most people dress up with a total of 69 students.
“My favorite day was probably Y2K because I feel like it was more creative than the other days,” Morgan Dickerson said.
Finally, wrapping up the week, Friday’s theme was extreme green and gold to show school spirit right before the big homecoming game. A bunch of people dressed up to represent our school’s colors. With another win, Juniors came in with 87 students dressed in green and gold. Freshmen were closely behind with 85 students, and sophomores took third with 81 people.
Spirit Week is one of the best times of the year. Students can get creative and imaginative with different outfits. This year was probably one of LHS’s most memorable spirit weeks, with some of the best themes for each day.
“I think it was a really fun spirit week that we had this year. Our days were better than last year and freshman year. It was overall really fun to do,” Jamison said.
