Student Council put out the announcement: lip sync practice starts at 2:30. Sadly, at 2:45, only five people stand in an empty gym.
Lakeland High School does an annual lip sync for each class during the homecoming assembly as part of the spirit competition. It is a tradition that may come to an end this year.
None of the grades have enough people to execute a lip sync performance. While, of course, the freshmen may always struggle to get people to participate, the upperclassmen always pull through covering the gym floor with students dancing and lip-syncing in front of the entire school.
Allison Knoll explained that the lip sync is a great way for students to get involved and have fun.
“It also creates memories,” Knoll said.
Each class gets a theme. Previous years have been Barbie, Halloween, Disney, USA, western and so much more. This year the themes are Superheros, Y2K, Clue and Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.
This year the need for people is so extreme that the student council will be holding a drawing for a Lakeland Perk gift card for whoever participates in the lip sync. Every person that participates will put their name in for a ten-dollar gift card to the coffee stand and then there will be a drawing where one person from each grade will win.
The lip-syncs are always fun to watch but are even more fun to be a part of.
Each class gets together after school or during lunch to practice the choreography. Nevertheless, each practice is optional but highly recommended, except for the final one, which is mandatory.
“I think getting the word out more might help more in years to come,” Knoll said.
Leeann Lohf has been the choreographer for the last two years and loves it. Dancing has always been an interest for her.
“I want it to look good, so that is why I am the choreographer,” Lohf said.
Other than the choreography and the competition, it is important for students to find ways to connect and have fun, which is why the lip sync is so exciting.
There is little time left but you can still join your class’ lip-sync before it is too late.
