Teachers have a tremendous impact on peoples’ lives. Whether it can be in a good way or bad way. When it comes to hiring new teachers it can be difficult to find someone who will not only teach the students well but also be there for them in any situation.
When Lauren Faulkner came into the picture, it was an easy decision to welcome her as a teacher at Lakeland High School.
This school year is Faulkner’s first official year as a teacher. She teaches psychology, law and order and history. She works with all grades at the school and makes learning fun for all those in her classes.
Beginning her career at Lakeland High School Faulkner was a student teacher under Nicholas Haynes.
Having the experience of being a student teacher can really help the new teacher gain experience and connections with some current students in the High school. Travis Mobbs is a current student teacher at Lakeland High School, working up towards being a teacher as well. He is a student teacher for Lakeland’s Senior English teacher, Steve Seymour.
Since being a student teacher for Haynes, Faulkner has known that a social studies-based teaching job was the way to go.
“I knew that if Lakeland was going to be hiring for a social studies position, I would apply right away. I am so thankful to have been given this opportunity to work here,” Faulkner said.
Adjusting to new students and routines as a new teacher can be difficult for the teacher as well as for students. Similar to moving to a new school, new teachers have to experience new people, classes and schedules. Faulkner describes frustrating days as “trying to drink from a firehose,” but she enjoys working with and creating bonds with students. Familiar faces from her student teaching can make starting new a bit easier.
Being a student teacher also allowed for an easier transition into the daily routine at Lakeland High School for Faulkner as well.
“I saw how welcoming and inviting the culture was and what great students the school has.” Faulkner said.
Although the school year has just begun, Faulkner has already made a lasting impact on students High School career. Many students look forward to her engaging and exciting classes.
“I love her, her class is engaging and I look forward to it.” Cheyenne Peugh said.
Social studies classes typically tend to be some of students favorites subjects. It allows them to understand the country and history that shapes their day to day lives. The classes also have many projects for students to participate in.
“I love the culture here at school. Go Hawks!” Faulkner said.
