Lakeland Hawks added another win to their record after taking on the Weiser Wolverines Friday, Sep 6.
The Hawks took down the Wolverines at home 41-20 in a non-conference football showdown. Lovie Weil had a highlight reel game as he continues to be Lakelands leading rusher. Weil finished the game with 4 rushing touchdowns, rushed for 184 yards and averaged 7.7 yards per carry. Weil was came to play, but also gave the crowd a very entertaining Friday night by even flipping into the in zone on one of his touchdown runs.
“Our offense was moving down field every drive with a full head of steam ready to go,” Weil said.
A running back is only as good as his offensive lineman, and Weil is always grateful for his boys on the front line.
Weils highlight flip-in for the touchdown was a move only someone who was ready to put it all on the line for his team could pull off.
“I saw the 2 defenders blocking my way, and I jumped over to reach and one thing lead to another,” Weil said.
Quarterback Haydon Benson had a crowd-stunning performance as well. Passing for 142 yards, Benson time after time continued to throw to his right-hand man Jace Taylor. Benson finished with 13 completions and one of those being a touchdown throw to Taylor.
“I always feel supported and I feel I have my team’s trust, which allows me to stay calm,” Benson said. Coming off an injury last season had made sure it won’t happen again. “I took the offseason very personal, I competed in track and continued to lift,” Benson said.
Cash Lund, who is always a problem for the other team’s offense, was making plays left and right on both sides of the ball. To play both sides of the ball, you must be ready to go at all times. “I try to go on runs as much as possible and keep my stamina up at all times,” Lund said.
Lund’s highlight of the game was a strip tackle in the 3rd quarter. He then ran the ball back to the 15-yard line, setting up Lakeland’s offense for another successful drive.
“I saw the running back holding the ball loose, and I knew I needed to make a play,” Lund said.
The Hawks will be taking on Frenchtown Highschool next week looking to extend their record to 4-0. The season has only begun, and it’s safe to say that the Hawks are here to play no matter the circumstances.
The Hawks are looking to take all this momentum and continue to win so that they can be prepared for the conference games near the end of the season, which includes the Lewiston Bengles as well as the Sandpoint Bulldogs.
“I’m always looking forward to those big games with tunnel vision and a tough mindset,” Benson said.
