Students enjoy having teachers that push them to do great things and help them to achieve their goals.
This year with many new teachers, it is important to get to know a little about all of them.
Kyle Deeter is an Algebra 1 teacher this year. He has taught math before at a middle school.
His goal as a teacher is to make his students like math a little more every day.
“My goal is to make them [My students] hate math just a little bit less every day,” Deeter said.
This is important because he wants to show his students that even though it can be boring, with the right teacher, it can be so much more fun.
Something teachers do not say every day is that they are professional e-sports players. As a fun little side hustle, Deeter plays in video game tournaments for money.
As a high school student, he always wanted to teach and coach. So he pursued what he wanted to do and ended up here at Lakeland High School to start his second year of teaching.
“He always has a positive attitude and makes learning fun,” said Joshua Callander.
Something that his students noticed about him is that he dresses nicely and looks well put together.
Callander said one thing interesting about Deeter is that he noticed he always is dressed professionally.
How someone dresses can say a lot about a person. This shows that he values how his students and coworkers view him because, yes, as a teacher, you have to dress halfway decent, but doing it repeatedly shows great character.
Even though he has only been teaching for going on two years, he used to work in a middle school, so he has surely learned a lot.
“Teaching in a middle school my first year was very enlightening and really helped me with classroom management and keeping the class engaged,” said Deeter.
Teaching middle school and high school students can be a challenging task, but those who find joy in it and can see the potential that their students have can impact their students a lot.
“Every day is something new, and I very much appreciate the relationships that you are able to build with the students,” Deeter said.
He is very familiar with this area because he was born in Coeur d’Alene and grew up in Rathdrum. He even had Shannon Mattilla as his math teacher for three years in high school.
So he took on Matilla’s teaching style.
“I would describe my teaching style as very ‘Mattilaesque,’ as Mrs. Mattila was my math teacher for 3 years when I was in high school,” Deeter said.
Even though it has only been a few weeks of school, his students already enjoy being in his class and look forward to what the rest of this year will bring.
