The Lakeland cheer team traveled to Nampa, Idaho to compete in the state cheer competition on Feb. 12. The team loaded up the bus first thing Feb. 10 to make the 7-hour drive.

The Hawks did not place for any events at state, however, they came very close. They were a mere half a point away from placing 3rd for their stunt routine, and one point away from placing 2nd.

Their show routine was only four points off from placing 2nd.

With the Ford Idaho Center packed with spectators, and teams from all across the state, the pressure was on. Some minor errors cost the Hawks some point deductions and penalties.

“We were very nervous to compete against all the other teams, there was a huge atmosphere, and we gave it our best.” said sophomore base Shelby Wear.

Sophomore base Mia Marquez had to watch her team perform without her after suffering a broken fibula in practice.“It definitely wasn’t our best performance, but the girls gave it they’re all. I’m looking forward to taking 1st at state next year” Marquez said.

Although the Hawks weren’t pleased with their performance, the team gave it their all and it was a great experience for the team.
