A few years back Lakeland High School started offering a program called KTEC (Kootenai Technical Education Campus) located in Rathdrum in the middle of the Prairie on Lancaster.

KTEC is an extension of high school that is offered to 11th and 12th-grade students. This two-year extension facility partners with both business and industry leaders for free grade training “while offering dual enrollment credits, industrial certifications, and a new route to success through applied skilled learning.” states the website.

They offer courses including automotive, computer engineering, diesel technology, healthcare, construction, among others. For the majority of courses offered it is a two-year program.

Half of a student’s day is spent at the KTEC and the other half at their high school. There are both morning and afternoon class options. Either you will spend your first three periods at school and your 4th-6th at KTEC or vice versa.

Schools all throughout the North Idaho area can apply to attend KTEC, such as Lake City High School, Coeur d’Alene High School, Venture High School, Post Falls High School, New Visions High School, Lakeland High School, Timberlake High School, and Mountainview High School.

KTEC student Emily Hendricks who is involved in the Health Professions/CNA course at KTEC says “I decided to join KTEC because I knew it was going to prepare me to go into the medical field. I also think it’s a great way to get college credits.” She states that her favorite part “is how involved you get to be with things.” Emily then proceeds to say “I absolutely do see myself continuing next year.”

“Even if the student does not go directly into the industry, the workplace skills, such as communication, problem solving, and punctuality are valuable lifetime tools.” says the KTEC website.

KTEC is a way to find and pursue a professional career at a younger age than most. The courses allow for hands-on learning experiences to make your professional interest more enjoyable.
