Lakeland offers several opportunities for athletes, but some students choose to expand their athletics by participating in a sport the school does not provide.
Clive Hobbs is a senior at LHS who is a starter on Lakeland’s varsity football team but has also found a passion for lacrosse.
“Actually, I saw a show that had lacrosse and it looked really interesting,” Hobbs said, “I wanted to try it out and I have a cousin who plays it so then I ended up trying it out in 8th grade and got stuck.”
The people in Hobbs’ life have had a big impact on who he is as a person and why he is such a hard worker.
“My dad is my biggest influence,” Hobbs said, “he always taught me to be tough and kinda just walk off whatever happens. Even his downsides are just something I can learn from. He and my papa are big sports guys, so they led me into sports when I was growing up.”
Hobbs has a great character and that is definitely seen through his work on the field, and even his attitude off the field.
“I have known Clive for a long time and I think honestly over the years he is taking all of his advanced and honors classes,” Hayden Bensen said, “He’s grown into a good person as a whole. I think he’s very mature, and he cares about other people.”
Hobb has a very memorable character and a lot of his teammates speak very highly of him.
“You do not see him on defense all that often, but on offense, he works very hard. I love when he pulls up the A gap,” Carter Vanak said, “he is a very hardworking and talented player. He is a great outgoing person, very smart, and is always kind to everyone and never starts with drama. He is just a great guy to be around.”
The Lakeland football team is not the only team Hobbs has made himself a part of in a great way, his Coeur d’Alene lacrosse teammates also think very highly of him.
“I love Clive,” Bennett Jockheck said, “he works so hard every practice he’s always going 100% every drill. As a friend, he drives me to do my best, as a teammate, he lifts me up as well. He is a true leader on the team.”
Hobbs has played football since 7th grade, but his favorite sport is lacrosse.
“Lacrosse is my favorite because I enjoy every practice day in and day out and the games too,” Hobbs said, “In Lacrosse, I have more trust in myself and my team has more trust in me, so I can kinda go have freedom rather than football, where it is a tight thing where I have a certain play that I have to run. It’s more free in lacrosse and I am able to do what I want to do and I have gotten good at it so I enjoy it a lot.”
Lacrosse might be his sport, but he leaves a good impact on the football field too.
“I think he’s one of the best teammates that I’ve had,” Benson said, “I think that honestly on the field it’s great to have people like him but off the field, he’s even more supportive. I think his morals and everything about him are just great and even better off the field. My favorite memory with Clive is probably our sophomore year of football when we got to go to every practice together. We were picked on by the older guys on varsity, but it was fun and worth it. That year Clive and I stuck together.”
The work ethic that Hobbs runs on has been in him ever since he was little.
“I was always the smaller kid, which was kinda what led me to be such an avid weightlifter,” Hobbs said.
His mindset has led him to the person and teammate that he is today.
“I am just trying to continue to better myself,” Hobbs said, “I know that whatever I do, I always can get better and will get better with hard work. The only consistent goal I have is to just get better at whatever I do and improve every day, in and out. I always try to set goals for myself in the season pretty much just to improve.”
Hobbs has a great mindset and work ethic that pushes others to improve as well.
“In the weight room he works really hard, ” Benson said, “Even on the football field he works hard. His effort is always there. I think he is honestly an inspiring teammate. For a lot of people, everything about him and everything he does shows that hard work does pay off and inspires others to do the same.”
Hobbs works really hard and has grown up to be an amazing athlete and leaves an impact on his teammates. His character is noticed by others and makes him different from most people. He is hoping to play lacrosse in college and continue growing in his love and skill in the sport even more.
